he loved the way her eyes

were too big for her face

and the tiny crack and snap

of her saliva when she smiled

that you could barely hear

she loved the way he hated music;

every kind, although music was her life

somehow she didn’t seem to mind

occasionally he’d crack and dance

she loved those moments too

he loved the way they opened up

right at the moment things came through

the times that she’d been hopeful and

the times that he’d been cut

stronger for their weaknesses

sitting on a wharf

their faces bright despite

only slight reflected light

they’d done the first kiss thing
